Current Brainstorms

I'm trying to think of something funny or profound to talk about. I really don't have anything. It's hard for me to even want to post something on here for some reason. I'm just in a blah mood. It's not that I really have a whole lot going on, but some interesting things have happened and I want to keep track of them.

This weekend, I went to Houston with Desiree (her thoughts), her parents, her aunt and uncle and their daughter. The primary purpose of the trip was to go see an art exhibit at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. The Dallas Morning News had an article this weekend. The exhibit was called, "The Heroic Century."

Ok, with all that said. I'll give my impressions. I'm not an art critic. I usually like what I like purely on whether or not it appeals to me. I don't care if it's famous. I don't care if was by a famous painter. Of all the paintings there, I probably truly enjoyed six of them. I guess it's like casting pearls before swine. I don't know enough to truly appreciate some of what I got to see this weekend. I enjoyed the show and I'm glad I went. But when it got to the abstractionists and some of the more modern art, I really wasn't impressed. One of the paintings I enjoyed the most was by someone I'd never heard of before. I and The Village by Chagall is the painting on the right. It's much more impressive in person when it's about 5' tall.

That night Dezi and I went to the Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Houston. Let me tell you that driving in a city like Houston with bad directions and trying to get around downtown is VERY confusing and even more frustrating. We finally made it to the restaurant. Only about 30 minutes late (and I really hate to be late to anything.) We met Kay and her boy friend Scott who's from the U.K. Lee and Matt (a.k.a. Bubba). We had a good time. I think everyone was hungry. From there we went to play pool at Slick Willies. I've never been in a nicer pool hall. It was really expensive, but we had a good time. Dezi decided later that she would like to learn how to play pool so we may have to get her a kids pool cue and see if she can handle that one better. The house cues were all as tall as she was and she had a hard time getting them to do what she wanted.

Sunday we headed back to Dallas and ran into a monsoon. We made it safely. The whole way down and back we listened to an audio book that I had downloaded. It was Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I'd heard of it before and knew that it was one of the "classic" science fiction novels, but I really enjoyed it. I'm going to have to get Speaker for the Dead at some point. Maybe I can listen to it too.
