USA Today has a disturbing, but intriguing article about the status of machines connected to the internet without patching and protecting the system.
They found that a Windows XP computer running service pack 1 could be infected within 4 hours of connecting to the network.
One of their big recommendations is to get away from using Internet Explorer as your web browser. Instead try Firefox (Which is what I use at home) or Opera.
