Converting MP3's to Ringtones on Motorola Phones

A while back Dezi and I merged onto one cell phone plan. Since I'm the geek that I am I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get a new toy. I got a Motorola Razr while Dezi got a little flip phone.

I had been enjoying the phone, but I wanted to add ringtones, but I didn't want to pay 2 bucks that Cingular will charge per ringtone. I was talking to a buddy at work who has the same phone and happened to hear her christmas ringtone. She told me her husband had taken a selection of her favorite Christmas CD and copied it to her phone. At that point I knew I had to learn how it happened. Since I couldn't find out how to do it on the internet, I had a new project.

I started getting a Bluetooth adapter and downloading a copy of GoldWave. I took a MP3 that I already had and ran it through GoldWave to trim out only the clip that I wanted to copy to the phone. I saved my selection as an MP3 and was ready to copy it to the phone. That was a little bit harder.

Once I had the adapter configured with my laptop, I had to learn how to connect to the phone. I turned on Bluetooth on the phone and then tried to connect from the laptop. It asked me to enter a value to pair against. With that all I had to do was copy the MP3 selection to the device. The folder I needed to copy to was "My Bluetooth Places\Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood\My Cell\OBEX File Transfer\audio".

Once I got that all figured out I spent a couple of hours playing with songs and copying them to my cell phone and to Dezi's. I now have the "Work Song" from Les Miserables as my ringtone. When my boss calls it plays "It's been a hard day's night and I've been working like a dog." Of course I've got the Aggie War Hymn loaded. Who knows what else I'll add later. It's nice to have options though.

Tada!

Well, I know I'm not completely finished, but I have something out there. Now I just need to follow through and get everything else fixed up. Ignore the stupid text on most of the sub pages. I'll fix that soon enough.

Back in the saddle again

For those of you who care. I am around, but I have a number of changes I want to make to the site. I have pretty much kept the same design the entire time I've had the site and I don't feel that it really reflects me any more. Unfortunately I just can't seem to find the time to complete the project I started several weeks ago. I have the design done, I need to add the extra pages and relaunch the site. Problem is when I work on the computer all day I don't want to come home and get right on the computer either. So that's what's going on with the site. A Bigger and Better Blog will be coming your way soon.

In the rest of my universe a lot of things have happened. Dezi and I finally got everything put away and have a guest room again. We haven't been quite as social as I'd like, but either one or both of us will be feeling crummy on the weekend and we just dont' venture out quite as much. We did have dinner with Josh, Jocelyn and Clayton over the weekend. Saturday our friend Leia was having a party. We wanted to go, but I ended up working and then got to feeling bad.

Yes I was working over the weekend... No I don't recommend it. I brought home two large computers from the office to get what I needed done. And unfortunately the first thing that happens this morning is that it needs to be redone because the was a problem with the data. Fun huh?

So I'm sitting here working on my laptop since I can't touch my work computer for the 3 hours it takes to generate the data file. In the mean time, I'm going to see what else I can do. Otherwise I think I'm going to successfully waste and entire day.
