Full of Spunk

As Dezi was being introduced to a teacher yesterday by one of her co-workers her co-worker told the teacher, "Don't be decieved. She may be little, but she's spunky."

Dezi was thrilled with the idea that she could be classified as spunky. I asked her what it meant to be spunky and she gave me a nice flowing definition. I told her that she just wanted her definition to be The definition of spunky. So after she gets home she gets online and sends me the definition. I thought I would share the vocabulary building experience.

Main Entry: spunky
Pronunciation: 'sp&[ng]-kE
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): spunk·i·er; -est:
full of spunk : SPIRITED
- spunk·i·ly /-k&-lE/ adverb
- spunk·i·ness /-kE-n&s/ noun

Since the definition is recursive and refers to being full of spunk, I had to go look up spunk
Main Entry: spunk
Pronunciation: 'sp&[ng]k
Function: noun
Etymology: Scottish Gaelic spong sponge, tinder, from Latin spongia sponge
1 a : a woody tinder : PUNK b : any of various fungi used to make tinder
2 : METTLE, PLUCK
3 : SPIRIT, LIVELINESS

So... technically by this definition, her co-worker could have been saying she was full of spongy fungus.

1 Comments:

  • Laughing - as I too, am looking up the definition, because I wanted to use it for coaching kids ....her conclusion had me especially laughing as it turns out "spunk" also, unfortunately, has an adult sexual term reference as well, relating to a "foul smell".
