How We Met
July 19, 2002, 5:15 p.m. I was driving towards a restaurant in Addison called The Melting Pot. I was on my way to attend a happy hour for a group called the Dallas Singles Charity Council. Their big fundraiser is a bachelor/bachelorette auction. While I was not in the auction, my friend Cyndi was. This meeting was an informational meeting for the auction. Cyndi and I had agreed to go to this meeting, then we'd go out to dinner and possibly go see a movie.
Unbeknownst to me, a guy named David was also making his way toward The Melting Pot. He was out of a job at the time, and was looking for different side jobs he could do until finding a permanent job. (Which he did find!) He had seen their web site, and had contacted the council president regarding doing some web work for them. The president told him to come to this meeting and they'd talk about it.
From David: Actually I wasn't hoping to get paid, I was hoping to use it as a networking opportunity to find a job. I talked to the web master for about an hour after the meeting, but he never did call me back. And they kept that hideous looking website.
I parked my car and went into the restaurant. It was right at five-thirty, which was when the meeting was supposed to start. Cyndi was not there yet, and I was ushered into a back room of the restaurant. I wound up standing next to a nice-looking guy who I guessed was around my age. He asked if I had any idea what was going on, and I said no. I introduced myself, and we started talking. We had the best time talking to each other! I saw his Aggie ring and inquired about it. We talked about our families, where we grew up, all kinds of stuff. We really seemed to connect. At the end of the meeting, I didn't want to leave, I was having such a good time talking to David. He gave me his business card, I was out of cards, so I wrote my number on a napkin. (How cheesy is that?) I remember thinking as Cyndi and I were walking out, wow, that was really weird, but great at the same time. I was excited about meeting a new friend. Neither of us had any grand expectations, yet somehow God put us together.
And that's our story. Our wedding will be a few days past the three year anniversary of the day we first met. How cool is that?
From David: Now the second half of this story is what happened after that. I was going to play pool and throw darts with several of my friends and thought I might invite Desiree. I didn't know much about her at that point, but thought she was cute. I was at Keri and Christi's house "not helping" cook spaghetti for dinner. Christi told me that I should go alone to meet this girl. So instead of a night with friends, it was just the two of us. And we had a very nice time. We played pool, darts, and got run out of a park while we talked about everything under the sun including our faith.
