I Married an Aggie

On the night we met, I noticed that David had a Texas A&M ring on. I remember us talking about the ring and about his college experience. As time went on, I learned that Aggies are a unique breed, David would jokingly say they're a cult.

I remember accompanying David to a wedding of one of his Aggie friends a few months after we started dating. When the bride and groom kissed, I heard a lot of whooping and had no idea what it was. I've heard about yell practice, fish camp, ol' army, tea-sips, the "whoop" that can come out of nowhere, and the ever popular "gig em", among other things. Any weird quirk that David does, I attribute it to being an Aggie thing. Most of the time, I'm right about it.

I think it's neat that two people can meet and instantly be friends because they are Aggies. I've found that while they may do seemingly strange things, Aggies are some of the nicest, most friendly people I've ever met. I have noted on several occasions where one or more of David's Aggie buddies have spent time talking to me when I didn't know anyone else. They have accepted me, as goofy as I am, and some of them I regard as my closest friends.

So I married an Aggie. I've been told this makes me an Aggie too. In that case, I'll don my Texas A&M shirt, give the thumb up and say "Gig em!"

  • Neat essay. There's a writer in your family--or two of them. And I'm talking about the Mr. and Mrs. Rollins family. Proud to have you, from one surrogate Aggie to another.
